Vuelve la calma con A song for vampires, Why are we running? y The guilded age.

ENGLISH VERSION

Pocket Tunes is the name of the first album of Binary Drift, solo project of Madrid based Peruvian singer-songwriter Mauricio Yrivarren. Consisting of 14 tracks, this is a predominately acoustic album, yet it also straddles genres from brit-pop to bossa nova. Likewise, the album -written in both Spanish and English- offers listeners a pleasant and rather surprising collection of songs, making it hard to tell the direction in which the next song will take them. It’s always nice to come across an artist that is unafraid to surprise the audience.

Opener All these years gone by, is the perfect song to lead into the album. Marked by guitars and vocals working in consonance to create an atmosphere of love and care, this song features actress Laurita Rex whose voice takes the song to another level. Next tracks Complete & Alive and Drifting, features Mauricio’s voice only and have a similar cadence as All these years gone by. Nevertheless, Drifting’s beat signals the exploration of the dissimilar styles found down the playlist. Before moving any further, we would like to highlight Yrivarren’s songwriting style: Melodic, calm and balanced.

The enticing Besos de morfina gives way into the next part of the album. Sung entirely in Spanish -while following the style of the previous three- relies on well-structured poetic lyrics roughly translating into: ‘On my knees, facing the sun / staring at your eyes / I’m a fantasy troubadour’ (‘De rodillas frente al sol / veo tus ojos negros / y en el viento soy un eterno trovador de fantasías’). In addition, the intro for Besos de morfina showcases trumpets. A very on point arrangement and a gift for those who love wind sections.

The album picks up speed with Love u Blind and its Spanish version Ordinario, whose disco vibes can get you hooked. Yrivarren doesn’t hide the fact that he feels very comfortable in both languages, and with Love u Blind he breaks from the calm and acoustic sounds found in earlier tracks and invites the listener to get up and dance.

A Song for Vampires, Why are we running? and The Guilded Age all bring us back to the aforementioned acoustic format. However, the Latin percussion of A Song for Vampires certainly adds another color to the album

During Power Inc. -a vibrant song with brit-pop elements- Yrivarren decides to speed things up again. But it is in Photographs where he shows his most intimate and personal side. The purist mix of piano, guitar, and vocals demonstrate this young artist has got it.

Albeit Walk on by’s unapologetic display of nostalgia, its melody channels a high degree of optimism, and thus this unusual balance of emotions results in a beautiful song with piercing choruses.

And finally we get to the last two songs, Madrid (although Mauricio is Peruvian by birth, he is now and adopted Madrileño) and Década, the two outstanding works in the album. In the case of Década Mauricio is unrepentant to sing about a heartbreak. Its perfect mix of melody and lyrics makes it my favourite one in this honest and precise collection of songs.

The public at large may be completely unaware of Pocket Tunes, nonetheless we think it is a remarkable and solid album. Moreover, it can for sure captivate the listener if given a chance. Don’t pass on it, you won’t be disappointed.
